Adilson Kindlemann is the first South American to compete in the Red Bull Air Race World Championship – South America is now the 6th continent represented. An airline pilot with 11,000 flight hours in his logbook and 1,200 hours in acrobatics, the Brazilian rookie with the Austrian roots was captivated by the race when it made its first stop in Rio de Janeiro in 2007, a race held in front of 1 million spectators.
Kindlemann made his first flight at 15 and has been hooked on flying ever since, taking on aeroplane maintenance jobs while studying for his commercial pilot’s licence. His began flying in competitions at age 21 in 1994 and was Brazil’s national aerobatic champion in the Unlimited category for 3 consecutive years between 2001 and 2004. Kindlemann is also an Honorary Member of the Brazilian Air Force.
Kindlemann, who has long been trained by former Red Bull Air Race pilot Klaus Schrodt of Germany, is a fan of classical music and especially Mozart. His main goals for his rookie season are to fly as safely and as cleanly as possible. A passionate and at-times stubborn Brazilian, he knows his hot blood will soon be pressing him to go all out for speed. Kindlemann said the plane is a vital element to success and hopes his will be fast enough to get a clear picture of where he stands by the 3rd race.
Kindlemann, who admires the styles of rivals Paul Bonhomme and Peter Besenyei, has experience flying dozens of different types of aircraft. He gave up his commercial aviation career to focus on the race and admits that after working so hard for 3 years to earn a spot in the championship he was briefly elated to learn he had made it. But he said he was quickly humbled when it dawned on him how much more work lies ahead of him.
