Akon has opened up about the ever-present Christina Aguilera and Lady Gaga comparisons. Unsurprisingly, he's on Team Gaga.
The Gaga and Aguilera comparisons began in 2008 as Gaga was first hitting the mainstream with singles "Just Dance" and "Poker Face", and Aguilera released Keeps Gettin' Better: A Decade of Hits -- a greatest hits album which saw her emerge with a distinct Gaga overtone to her image.
When presented with the similarities by the LA Times, Aguilera was less than complimentary:
"This person [Lady Gaga] was just brought to my attention not too long ago. I’m not quite sure who this person is, to be honest. I don’t know if it is a man or a woman. I just wasn’t sure."
Now as Aguilera re-enters the music sphere with single "Not Myself Tonight", the comparisons have flared up again, and this time Akon's weighing in.
Akon, who signed Gaga to his record label, recently discussed the comparisons with VIBE:
"Aw man, that’s not even any competition... You are actually giving Christina too much credit. She always had her cool little look and way about how she went about things. But soon as Gaga came out everything switched up. Christina stepped out of her own shell to become something different. And the crazy thing is Christina is really talented. She has unlimited range when it comes to singing. Her voice is out of here. I just think she just needs to believe in herself more. I think sometimes she gets insecure because of all of the success Gaga has had not realizing that she was already successful before Gaga came out."
Akon didn't stop there, however, declaring he missed the "old Christina Aguilera" and that he liked "the old one better than the new one".
He offered some hope for Aguilera, however, musing:
"Gaga and Christina could probably get together and do something that’s amazing. But that’s impossible if they are both trying to do the same exact thing musically."
Aguilera's fourth studio album Bionic is scheduled for a June 4 release.
