Aloe Blacc – the mastermind behind the hit song “I Need A Dollar” – waited patiently for more than a decade for his music to have an impact.
Blacc, who has been an MC since the 90s, finally achieved commercial success with his latest song. He said the long road was totally worth it.
“It’s been a long time coming as an indie artist. Now I finally get to do some shows where people come see me,” he told Nova’s nights team.
“It was definitely a long wait but you know, I did some things in between.
“I’ve had a few jobs and went to school and I busied myself. It’s nice to finally get some recognition and do what I really love.”
Blacc said if he was down to his last dollar, he would use it to get a little help – which is the main message behind his track.
“Maybe a phone call to a friend, asking for some help – or maybe just a place to sleep,” he said.
“Sometimes a person just needs a chance. That’s kind of what the song’s about – giving somebody a chance.
“Everybody’s got value. You’ve just got to figure out what their value is and help them realise their full potential.”
