As of Monday, 25th of January 2010, Avatar is the highest grossing film of all time...just 39 days into its release.
It pretty much smashed every box office record that stood in its way and has now gone on to topple Titanic as the biggest money making movie EVER.
Claiming the title is a massive achievement in itself, but even more credit must be paid considering Titanic had held the #1 spot for 12 years, having made $1.84 billion ($1,843,201,268) at the box office (Avatar has so far reached $1.85 ($1,858,866,889). Not to mention the list of movies that have come out since then that, while failing to beat Titanic, stood in its way with their impressive takings:
The Lord of The Rings: The Return of The King ($1.12b)
Pirates of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest ($1.06b)
The Dark Knight ($1.01b)
Harry Potter & The Philosophers Stone ($968m)
Pirates of The Caribbean: At Worlds End ($958m)
Another cool fact: 72% of Avatar's takings have come from its 3D screenings. If you haven't seen it, you need to see why. And if you have, you'll already understand why...but you should see it again anyway.
With it remaining in cinemas for the foreseeable future, how far can it go and what could possibly beat it? Perhaps Avatar 2? Yes, James Cameron has (apparently) long had a story in mind and also included scenes in Avatar that specifically relate to the sequel. But that, surely, will be a few years away at least.
Good news for our Sam Worthington...he has already signed on to star.
Stay tuned.
