‘Everyone’s a little bit racist’
Really? Are we? Apparently so according to Princeton.
We’d heard the hype, so we moseyed on across the street to the Regal Theater to see what all the fuss was about.
Something a little more left of field in comparison to the usual Theatre performances, Avenue Q combines wit, humor, filth, racism and of course Porn, in a witty & hilarious combination that will have the audience roaring with laughter. Think Sesame street meets South Park in the Ghetto. It’s crude, rude, and vulgar with a hint of honesty that we need to hear every now and then.
The set is cleverly designed and sets the scenes for the performance from the word go. While it predominantly involves puppets, they are all operated by performers that we can clearly see, they make no attempt to hide the puppeteer and even though we can clearly see the actors working the puppets it doesn’t take long before your focus changes to the Puppets. The puppet is simply an extension of the performer’s body, and while the movements are clear, when it comes to facial expressions it’s here the puppeteer dominates. The cast do a spectacular job of adding human qualities to the characters with some managing to control multiple puppets.
The story evolves as University Graduate Princeton, arrives on Avenue Q with a dream of finding his ‘purpose’ and making his mark on the world, and it’s here he meets the locals, Kate Monster, Gary Coleman, Brian, Christmas Eve, Republican Rod, Nicky and of course Trekkie Monster.
The Music fits in perfectly with the story and stand-out songs like ‘Everyone’s a little bit racist’, ‘the more you love someone’, ‘it sucks to be me ‘and we can’t of course forget ‘the internet is made for porn’.
So if you haven’t already realized that Avenue Q is very much Adult themed, to make it crystal clear, you also see Puppet Sex on stage, make no qualms about it, there is full puppet nudity here!
Avenue Q has uproarious comedy, and real moments of sadness. It’s a musical with a twist and gets away with more than a normal show could.
This is one show you won’t be disappointed in.
