He’s the man for the job, he won’t waste no time, one hundred percent, he’ll work it and make Big Day Out 2010 worth it. Get loose, let go, throw a coupla shapes and get ready to dance wiv Dizzee Rascal this summer.
East London rapper Dizzee Rascal bounded into the limelight with his Mercury Music Prize-winning debut Boy in da Corner in 2003; his sound an eye-opening collage of garage, hip hop, grime, found sounds and eclectic electronica, his words a fierce, quick-witted mix of youthful urban confusion and conviction.
He’ll fly Down Under this summer on the back of his fourth album, Tongue n’ Cheek, which has transformed him from underground MC to chart-topping hip hop kingpin in his homeland. Featuring collaborations with the likes of Tiesto, Calvin Harris (the No.1 hit Dance Wiv Me) and Armand van Helden (the next No.1 hit Bonkers), Dizzee calls Tongue n’ Cheek his party album – naughty and nice, with something for everyone.
“A pop record sharp enough to be the bratty but irresistible younger brother of Lily Allen’s It’s Not Me, It’s You.” (The Observer, September 2009)
At Glastonbury 2009, “Dizzee came out all guns blazing,” said Clash Music, and “triumphed,” declared The Guardian. “It wasn’t just the music… it was his personality that kept the crowd engaged, and his manner that spread enthusiasm throughout the crowd.” Dizzee’s crowd favourite Bonkers was the hit of the festival and of the UK summer – now it’s Big Day Out’s turn to go Bonkers and light up our own summer with his next hit-in-waiting, Holiday.
“A taut, thrilling and joyous set in the afternoon sunshine, where Rascal was taken into 100,000 hearts with ecstatically received songs like Sirens, Jus’ a Rascal and smash hit Bonkers. This was one of the performances of the weekend, and, you suspect, Mr Rascal’s lifetime.” (musicOMH, June 2009)
Bonkers is all about livin’ life and bein’ free – the perfect attitude for summer Down Under. And Dizzee Rascal is the man who’ll be driving Big Day Out bonkers in 2010.
