Big Day Out Hits - Melbourne

By NOVA100's Assistant Music Director, Amanda Lee

This year I set out for Flemington Racecourse as a Big Day Out virgin. With one of the best festival line-ups for 2010, I was expecting BIG things and I wasn’t disappointed.

So who thrilled the pants off me?

Kasabian: Apparently every year the organisers always put a band on at the wrong time and this year, it was Kasabian. The band had one of the biggest crowds of the day, fans knew every song and were left wanting more. Huddle amongst a sea of bogans wearing wife beaters and boardies,  I watched 15-year-old girls hugging and squealing as Kasbian rocked out some of their classics like ‘Shoot the Runner’ and their more recent tunes ‘Fire’ and ‘Fast Fuse.’

Passion Pit: They’re underrated and I found this out when I struggled to get anywhere near their stage. Even though half the band was sick (one band member was still on a drip 5 minutes before the gig) they had their fans in a spin. You would think tracks with a lot of airplay like ‘Sleepy Head’ and ‘Little Secrets’ were the most recognised but the Aussie kids knew every song lyric. Band of the year – well that’s my prediction anyway. My prediction is band of the year!

Lily Allen: With her outrageous fashion and dirty mouth, she was always going to be a highlight. Sporting an Australian flag as a t-shirt, Lily Allen engaged the crowd with lines like ‘I’ve been sick; shitting left, right and centre the last two days’ and thrilling fans with ‘Fk You,’ ‘Not Fair,’ and ‘Back to the Start.’ Lily was a little flatter than last time I saw here, but you would be after a few days of gastro. Totes to her for giving another stellar performance.

Muse: Probably the loudest band of the day (I’m a Nana and needed the ear plugs), Muse pulled out all stops with massive big screens around the stage, banging classics  and of course the encore with the All Star Band singing AC/DCs ‘Back in Black.’ Not being a massive fan, I was converted in the first 10 minutes rocking out to ‘Undisclosed Desires,’ ‘Resistance’ and ‘Uprising.’ Even though I would never be caught dead wearing a band t-shirt, their performance nearly warranted me spending my dollars on one – eek, I’ve changed!

Big wraps also to Aussie bands Jet, Kisschasy and Temper Trap who had packed stages, put on amazing performances and proved that Aussie music is right up there with the Internationals. Be proud lads.

Sure, it was a great day all round but perhaps a name change next  year – Bogan Day Out? C’mon we all have an inner bogan and on Australia Day, we all love a bogan don’t we?

Aussie Aussie Aussie. Oi oi oi!
