Just because the poster is pink and the movie is about a wedding, don’t think for one second this is just another ‘bride movie,’ chick flick or romcom; Bridesmaids is quite possibly the funniest movie I’ve ever seen.
When I first mentioned to the Twitter world that I was off to catch Bridesmaids I instantly got back a tweet “There was a dress, a fight and someone was in love with someone else’s partner.” While I couldn’t help but drive to the cinema with this pre-conceived idea too, I can honestly say I was wrong… really wrong!
Like Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” is a return fire to Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind,” Bridesmaids is the chick version of the male-oriented The Hangover. From the same producers of Knocked Up and The 40-Year-Old Virgin this film will have you rolling on the floor laughing – and in tears.
Poor Annie’s (Kristen Wiig) life is spiraling out of control. Her business has gone under, she broke up with her boyfriend, her housemates (Matt Lucas & Rebel Wilson) can only be described as “undesirable” and right when she doesn’t need anything else going on in her life; her best friend Lillian (Maya Rudolph) asks her to be her maid of honor.
Faking her way through the expenses, wedding traditions and dress fittings, Annie attempts to lead the very eclectic gang of bridesmaids (Rose Byrne, Ellie Kemper, Wendi McLendon-Covey & Melissa McCarthy) to the wedding day.
While the film does have elements of your typical wedding movie the funny moments far outweigh the clichés , so much so you’ll find yourself saying ‘she did not just say that!’ The all-female lead cast come out with lines that you would expect from a 5 foot, 100KG guy not a blushing bride.
Kristen Wiig does a fantastic job driving this mayhem down the road and brings a somewhat bogan flair to the movie. Not only does Wiig take the lead role, she also wrote and co-produced with Judd Apatow (Step Brothers, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Knocked Up & The 40 Year Old Virgin).
This movie is funny, inappropriate and completely rude. And it’s even better that it’s all about a bridal party. For once we get some insight into what women really get up to.
Bridesmaids hits cinemas on June 16.
