The Brisbane Broncos caused an upset in Melbourne beating the Storm at the new AAMI Park. Mitch "The Prince" Lewis reports.
Who saw this one coming?
The Broncos were the bad guys in Melbourne yesterday, squashing hopes of a Storm victory to officially open their new home ground of AAMI Park.
But it was a different story here in Brissie, happy with our boys snatching a much needed win and did it over a team that probably no one expected them to beat.
The Storm were well short of their best. Without their captain Cameron Smith who went down with an injured elbow in Friday nights Test against New Zealand, they just weren't the same team that has so far overcome the enormous controversy surrounding their salary cap drama.
But nothing should be taken away from our Broncs, who played miles above their efforts in recent weeks as they struggle through an early season injury crisis.
Israel Folau showed off in front of his old home crowd, scoring a double while Corey Parker was perfect with the boot, kicking six from six.
Ben Te'o put in some big defensive hits playing out in the centres and even crossed the line for a try. And our boy Sam Thaiday once again was all over the park.
Playing in the second row, Sammy often found himself attacking in the centres and had a hand in Folau's near-length of the field try.
With the Maroon team to be announced next week, our boys did well to prove what they can do.
They next take on the Gold Coast Titans in the local derby at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night for this weekends NRL Heritage Round.
