After months and months of casting rumours, Captain America finally has a face: Chris Evans.
(For those unaware...Captain America is a superhero from the Marvel Universe (Spider-Man, X-Men, The Fantastic Four), but more specifically, a soldier genetically engineered in the 1940's as means to help the Allies win World War II. He is also leader of The Avengers, the legendary team of superheroes)
Beating out the likes of John Krasinski (The Office), Chace Crawford (Gossip Girl), Mike Vogel (Cloverfield, upcoming She's Out of My League), Garret Hedlund (upcoming Tron: Legacy), Ryan Phillipe and Channing Tatum, Evans has signed on to don the blue tights to become all patriotic superhero. Strange thing is, Chris Evans has already played a one: The Human Torch from the Fantastic Four movies. But, that franchise is dead in the water, so he's free to move on to other roles. And truth be told, Captain America will be better than FF.
This is all very exciting as we're now that little bit closer to The Avengers movie, that will see Cap team up with Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man, Edward Norton's Incredible Hulk and Thor (played by Aussie Chris Hemsworth, released May next year).
The announcement sees Evans sign a NINE picture deal with Marvel Studios that will have him star in at least least three Captain America movies, the upcoming Avengers and various cameos in other Marvel pictures (much like Robert Downey Jr's brief appearance at the end of The Incredible Hulk).
The First Avenger: Captain America will be released July 22, 2011. In the meantime, we have Iron Man 2 to look forward to on April 29 (check out the new trailer below).
