One of Australia’s favourite track athletes Tamsyn Lewis is out of the Commonwealth Games but thinks she might not be missing anything.
Lewis, who has withdrawn with a knee injury, told Hughesy and Kate on Nova 100 there were a growing number of athletes worried that the Games won’t happen at all.
With the Games due to start next month, India has been rocked by terrorism threats and collapsing infrastructure.
“People are starting to get really worried now. I think when the bridge fell down and the weightlifting roof collapsed I think there’s a few athletes that are really starting to stress that the Games won’t go on," Lewis said.
“Some of my teammates are in such good shape... they were going to go win a medal and they might not win another medal in another championship, so it was a big deal for them.
“I am hoping they won’t be (cancelled), I’m fingers crossed they’ll be fine but with England saying that they’re holding back sending their team as is Scotland you’ve got to hope that India pulls it off because they’ve spent over $3 billion on it that they don’t have.
“If one powerhouse country pulls out then I reckon that’s it but I really hope they don’t because I still think the Commonwealth Games has a place on the sporting calendar.”
‘Just not in India’, Kate quipped!
