Channel V's Danny Clayton headed to Big Day Out in Sydney over the weekend, and he takes Nova through his Big Day Out experience.
I could talk for hours about the Big Day Out. I could tell you how amazing Girl Talk was with his toilet paper canons and his stage over run with music fans… me included.
I could tell you about Blue Juice, their skin tight yellow Bruce Lee outfits and their mincey tiger prancing on stage.
I could tell you about the amazing music by Goons of Doom, Passion Pit, Dizzee, Peaches, Muse, Lily Allen and blah blah blah but I am going to cut to the chase and tell you what you really want to know… what happened backstage!
I don’t know how it was possible but this year I was allowed to film in the artist compound so I managed to witness many strange things while wedged in between the dressing rooms of Muse, Temper Trap and The Horrors.
It is pretty hard not to be impressed by Dizzee Rascal who was the loudest in the backstage area. He not only started a soccer match back stage but also skateboarded past all the band’s dressing rooms with Cedric from the Mars Volta who is a surprisingly good skater.
Lily Allen would have to be a highlight too, especially when she came off stage after her set, ripping off her dress and jumping into a kiddie pool set up in front of her dressing room wearing next to nothing.
The Dodgem cars were a nice touch too… yes, dodgems cars. It seemed like Stav from Blue juice and Vince from The Midnight Juggernaughts spent an hour driving in those things. I couldn’t tell if I was being a wanker after roughly running into Lisa Mitchel as she drove past… but felt a little bit better when she pole axed me 1 minute later… not so sweet after all!
The way I imagined backstage at the Big Day Out when I was a punter is dull in comparison to it’s reality.
I am very fond of the Big Day Out and can’t wait for the rest of the tour.
