What started out as a far-fetched fantasy for Marina Diamandis has resulted in a pretty sweet real-life fairytale.
The Welsh pop starlet, who shot to fame on the BBC Sound of 2010 list, says a world she once created for herself in an effort to boost her existence, has in fact become her reality.
Diamandis explained to Nova that when she started out, she chose the band name Marina and the Diamonds as a way of making her feel -- and sound -- bigger than she really was.
“At the time I was a loser and I had no fans. This whole thing was a dream that I created because I wanted to have fans, and I wanted an imaginary audience,” she says.
“I’m quite an idealist. I like the idea of having a collective of people that all are connected in a universal way and I think music really does that. It’s such a powerful thing when one song can connect people of different ages, genders, races and backgrounds.
"It’s very rare – and that was always my goal. I still haven’t achieved it but I feel like I’m going to.”
