Some have called them nappy pants and others the most comfortable duds since trackies, but printed harem pants are emerging as a perfect alternative to jeans this winter.
The loose pants got a good airing in the US over the northern spring and they’re fast making an impression here among those of us bored to death with denim.
Although harem pants are nothing new, the new styles are all about the print. And celebrities are demonstrating just how trans-seasonal they can be.
Don’t believe it? Just look at the rears of Rihanna and Whitney Port. The pair have both been spotted in recent months rocking printed harems in a chic off-duty effortless style.
But how do you wear printed harem pants without making your butt look like Roseanne’s?
When it comes to the good old harem, it can pay to go neutral because bold designs will bring attention to your lower half. Perfect for this are printed harems in a subtle print such as the sass and bide harems Whitney Port is rocking here. Sportsgirl has a very similar pair.
Silhouette-wise, harem pants can be difficult because of their pouffy top, slim leg bottom combination. But to balance it out opt for a slim fitting top above the waistband. If you need a jacket, cropped ones work the best. And consider adding a belt and tying it, not buckling it.
For true cold weather style inspiration, follow in the footsteps of Brit TV presenter Ferne Cotton, who pairs her spotty harems with a cute jacket and booties, here. There is no reason you can’t winter up this trend with a cropped cardigan either.
In warmer weather the harem works perfectly with a tucked in tee, singlet or cropped top. And the rise in temperature should be encouragement to try a bolder print. Rihanna demonstrates how a simple tee and pared down accessories make a bold pant work, here.
The right summery print can spice up a look, as demonstrated by Margherita Missoni, here. To go for true style in 40 degree weather, try a cropped singlet in a neutral hue and wedges with a colourful pant.
For a sophisticated edge, opt for high-waisted versions paired with a sharp heel. And remember to have fun! Printed pants are kinda silly, so don’t be afraid to mix prints.
