Fashionova's budding Fashionista Lauren Brain reports on her findings from the L'Oreal Paris Runway 5. Featuring well known designers White Suede, Bettina Liano, This is Genevieve, Extinct, Joveeba, Wayne Cooper, Nicholangela, Nina Mayer and HussyIf one thing’s certain after hitting Docklands for night four of LMFF – you’ll be buying leather this winter!
It came in every shape last night, with black the resounding favourite. Jackets, long-line vests, mini skirts, and tights; it featured in nearly every collection as White Suede, Bettina Liano, This is Genevieve, Extinct, Joveeba, Wayne Cooper, Nicholangela, Nina Mayer and Hussy showed us their latest collections.
Melbourne fave Wayne Cooper gave us a show all about contrasts. Tough and sexy black leather looks were interspersed between pretty, demure outfits in pastels and soft fabrics. Though I was more taken by the AH-MAY-ZING bling! Shiny shiny baubles adorning models’ wrists, fingers, ears and necks – it was too hard to pay attention to the clothes
White Suede delivered incredibly wearable pieces with its signature stylish approach. Jeans and blazers featured heavily, as did the pointed shoulder – again.
Bettina Liano stayed sexy with a range of leather and corseted looks, and it was all about sequins, sequins, sequins. Shiny fabrics were included in every look for the first half of the collection. And the winner of Best Jeans of the Night Award goes to Extinct for its high rise black skinnies, which fit the leggy model like a glove.
West Australian label Joveeba was a favourite, offering something different to the same old skin-tight mini dresses, peaked shoulders and one-shoulder looks, while still hitting the trend high notes. Amazing heavy geometric neckpieces in black and gold hung from models’ necks like name plates, and the occasional use of sequined fabrics ensured it didn’t turn tacky. They used the kind of fabrics you just want to run up and touch, the softest of silks which flowed like liquid as the girls hit the runway, giving a beautiful feminie silhouette. And the digital printing, something which only a few designers have touched on this season, created a real aesthetic point of difference.
The colour palate of vivid purples, navy, cream and black is just right for winter, and the soft fabrics make it perfect for layering up.
Also fantastic to see the models stopping at the end of the runway for this collection – something which hasn’t happened much this year. Instead they’ve been walking a loop, without pausing for the photographers.
Another major trend really rammed home last night was the ankle boot and sock look. Cute lurex ones in silver and purple were used on the runway, but chunky cable knit ones also look great. It’s well-suited for a Melbourne winter anyway, so we’re not complaining.
Overall a show of wearable looks that you could easily incorporate into your winter wardrobe for an instant 2010 updater. But the chatter after the parade was that this show didn’t deliver the same ‘punch’ as we’d seen previous nights.
The hair was a bit flatter… Is it possible that mood is proportional to hair height?
