On the new series I Was Impaled, the 78-year-old explained, "I had already made one run on the property and just started on the second round and something hit my chest… I just thought, 'Well, it just threw up a stone or something,' and I kept on moving.
"I looked down and my shirt was just covered in blood," he continued. "I thought, 'Gosh, that must have been a very sharp stone, and it must have cracked a rib or broke the skin at least."
Mr Carman's wife demanded that he go to hospital, where he had a CT scan and the nail was discovered.
The doctor, Todd Rosengart, says that even now, five years on, he's floored that the nail was able to penetrate Mr Carman's skin without any visible signs from outside.
It took two hours of surgery to remove the nail.
