Local lads Tape/Off describe themselves as “like `Face/Off’ with cassettes.”
Certainly not as bad as that train wreck of a movie, Tape/Off played The Cubby Hole last week and practically made the crowd’s ears bleed with their louder than loud blend of alternative indie rock.
They opened their set with “Ambulance” followed by “Visitor” with the latter incorporating a fuzzy bass line.
By the time they hit “Well Dressed,” which was a mix of fast, punchy lyrics and Speedy Gonzales style drumming, the crowd was well and truly warmed up.
Tape/Off compare their sound to Hungry Kids of Hungary but their last song, “Sweater Curse” is hopefully prelude to a sound they can call their own.
Drummer Branko Cosic, who has been compared to everyone’s favourite muppet, Animal, set the pace with his inspired drumming.
Lead singer and bass guitarist Brenton Maybury’s stage presence has vastly improved since the last time Tape/Off played, upping the ante and giving the band a certain je ne se quois.
Tape/Off may still be finding their own sound, but there is definitely something about this band that people are going to want to pay attention to.
