Speaking to the Courier Mail, Gotye said, “They did such a faithful arrangement of the instrumentals but the vocals were that pop Glee style, ultra dry, sounded pretty tuned and the rock has no real sense, like it’s playing to you from a cardboard box…It made it sound dinky and wrong."
The cover was sung by Darren Criss and guest star Matt Bomer, who play brothers in the hit musical television show.
Gotye recently became the first Australian to top the US charts in over a decade.
“I wrote the song and everything else has been a series of surprises," he said of the achievement. "In a way, after you’ve made a record, you’ve made it and everything else that happens feels like you are a bystander… It is kind of surreal.”
