House vs Hurricane has been nominated in the Jagermeister Independent Music Awards.
This means fans of the band also have a chance to win flights, accommodation and 2 tickets to the event in Melbourne on Friday 1st October 2010 just by voting for their favourite artists here.
We sat down with Joey Fragione (Keys/Synth/Piano) and Ryan McLerie (Guitar/Vocals) to discuss how being up against the monster that is Parkway Drive is tough at any award night. Oh, and messages from aliens as well as egos, tattoos and money...
People might hear influences of underground US bands in your sound but what Australian band have you obsessed over and why?
The first Australian band I ever really obsessed over from memory would be The Living End. Their unique sound and punk rock attitude definitely got my attention. Savage Garden and Silverchair would also have to be up there.
What was your first musical memory that made you want to make your own?
My first musical memory would have to be when I was 8 years old and I stumbled across my dad’s acoustic guitar during one of my routine house hunting missions. I remember playing that thing until my fingers bled.
What was your reaction when you found out about this year’s nominations?
Up against Parkway Drive??? Good luck!
But if they don't take a trophy do you want it?
About as badly as I want my hemorrhoid to be no longer.
What gets you through a long tour?
There are often times you don't enjoy being on the road, it's mostly rad but you do get to know your iPod library pretty well.
What are three bands/songs in your playlist that people should know about and why?
Brand New, Mumford And Sons and The Bloodhound Gang. Great bands with great songs.
What has been in your playlist that you’d prefer people NOT know about and why was it there?
I love everything on my "playlist" and am quite open about my somewhat strange taste in music. Everyone loves Aqua, Marilyn Manson and Enya but I must admit, The Spice Girls must have been at a strange stage in my life.
If your current release was a movie, what would it be?
The Shawshank Redemption but instead of Andy getting away, he gets caught and shot in the head - so close yet, so far!
Tell us a secret or something special about your current release that might have gone un-noticed to casual listeners…
If you listen carefully you'll find a hidden message given to us by aliens to pass on to you, the public. So you best go pickup a copy of Perspectives and give it a good listening over...
Describe a time when you didn’t enjoy what you were doing as a band...
The stress of recording in the US and being cooped up together got pretty tense. Plus, Baltimore isn't the nicest place in the world (see The Wire).
What is something about music or the music industry that you can’t stand right now?
Everyone seems to be joining bands for the wrong reasons these days. It used to be about originality and a way to express yourself through song but now it all seems to be about having the most tattoos, biggest egos, hottest girlfriends and money. If all you can do musically is copy someone else's sound then I think it’s time you start looking for a different career path. Your recycled bullsh*t isn't wanted or needed.
What’s the best thing you’ve ever seen someone get on a rider?
A midget with a pet monkey playing a ukulele while drinking a beer, doing a jager bomb and smoking a cigar.
