It's all about Dragons this week!
Both the family movie How To Train Your Dragon and the very adult, anticipated adaptation Girl With The Dragon Tattoo hit the screens. And this is what I think...
How To Train Your Dragon
Movies like Toy Story, Shrek, Finding Nemo & Wall-E come few and far between most of the other less than average kids films that come out...but fortunately, How To Train Your Dragon isn't one of them. Actually, it's probably one of the best movies to come out so far this year. Voiced by Jay Baruchel (upcoming She's Out of My League), Gerard Butler (The Bounty Hunter), America Fererra ("Ugly Betty") and Jonah Hill & Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Superbad) this is among those animated movies that are great for young and old.
Baruchel voices Hiccup, son of a great warrior and heir to the Viking Chiefdom. But Hiccup has a problem: despite his efforts and ideas, he is useless as a warrior when it comes to fighting the Vikings' nemesis, the Dragon. But when he manages to capture one, he realises they're not the dangerous beasts everyone thinks they are and sets out to change everything his village has ever thought they knew.
HTTYD is a great ride. It's very funny and even though it's an animation, the action pieces are still due a lot of credit. It's also got the lovey-dovey, father/son relationship at it's core that's very central and touching, but that's a given and we need not go into it.
And I must implore to you, like Avatar, this must be seen in 3D. Unlike a bunch of other stuff to come out this year, How To Train Your Dragon was made in 3D, not converted later to cash in on the trend. The 3D is amazing and definitely worth paying the extra couple of bucks for.
