HUGHESY believes he is on the way to playing in Australian Open 2010 despite admitting to losing to the fattest kid in Warrnambool in 1985 in his only competitive tennis match.
Winner of 22 grand slam events, Todd Woodbridge, joined Hughesy, Kate and Ed on the show on Monday morning to launch ‘Team Legend Hughesy’, which will see Hughesy take on Woodbridge later this month with a huge support team of Nova listeners.
If Hughesy performs well, Woodbridge said he could earn a spot in the Legends tournament at Australian Open, competing against the likes of Pat Rafter and the Scud. Even Hughesy’s regular sparring partner, Kate, is on board.
“You need a great team,” she said. “From this moment I’m going to stop disrespecting. I’m not going to mention that you’re fat, that you’re unfit, that you’re not a very good tennis player. You will never hear me speak of those things. I’m on board Team Legend Hughesy!”
Hughesy admitted he had “dropped off a bit” in terms of fitness and had lost to “the fattest guy in Warrnambool” in a school boys tournament in 1985 but got the much needed pep-up he needed when Woodbridge said he believed Hughesy was a better tennis player than Tiger Woods.
Woodbridge used to live near Woods in Orlando Florida and the two spent time together, including Woodbridge teaching Woods a slice backhand (he didn’t want a double handed backhand). Woodbridge has also seen Hughesy play when he umpired Hughesy’s victory over Peter Helliar.
The fact that Tiger is a golfer didn’t seem to matter to Hughesy, who celebrated the news by yelling ‘IN YOUR FACE WOODS, GIVE ME $3 MILLION!”
The Woodbridge v Hughes tennis match happens at Melbourne Park on Friday 27th November, from 10am.
You can be part of Team Legend Hughesy by playing a support role to Hughesy. So far suggestions from Kate, Ed and Todd have included ball boy, boy girl, cheerleader, masseur, doctor, caterer, drink getter, towel person…. and on the back of Andre Agassi’s autobiography… crystal meth dealer, wig fixer, jilted lover or hot girlfriend.
