South Aussie Michael Weldon has fallen just short of Kate Bracks who's taken out the 2011 Masterchef title.
The pair faced eachother in the finale last night, the two cooks having to make it through 3 rounds of points scoring to see which of them would be crowned the winner.
Michael scored early with a 4 stage mystery box challenge, serving up his version of steak and oyster pie minus the pie which beat Kate's bug and crab salad.
In the second round, the pair had to cook a dish showing a range of techniques they had learned throughout the competition. Michael served up a butter pocahed lobster while Kate took the lead with her quail dish.
Michael headed into round 3 just 3 points behind Kate when it all came down to a pressure test. A Snowman carrot dessert made by the number one chef from the number one restaurant in the world Noma in Copenhagen.
The pair both managed to finish the dish which included liquid nitrogen carrot sorbet, carrot and passionfruit puree and snow made from yoghurt.
When asked what the dessert tasted like Kate says "It doesn't sound very good but it tased so beautiful because there's also sugar and passion fruit in there. I don't know it's just one of those things that you put in your mouth and it's almost like a little explosion in your mouth."
The judges scored Michael well giving him two 8's and two 9's but it was Kate's clean sweep of 9's that handed her the win.
Kate says she still hasn't come to terms with it all just yet "I feel like I have to pinch myself again, it's kind of crazy really."
While Kate has scored the cash and a cook book deal it's not all bad coming second for Michael. Judge Gary, impressed with Michael's dedication throughout the series has offered him a scholarship in his Melbourne restaurants with $10,000 and a wage to get him started.
