Labrinth: “F**k that, I just wanna make music”

The 22-year-old has been making music since his early teens and produced Electronic Earth entirely on his own, as well as writing and performing the songs. In total, it’s been a process drawn out over two years.

“I’ve been producing other artists alongside myself so it wasn’t easy getting it all together while doing other work alongside it,” he explains.

“I was always making records for other people and to do it primarily for myself was a whole different experience. I learnt a lot about myself, put it like that. I learnt a lot about myself and I learnt a lot about being an artist since making this album.

“This album, for me, was my offering as a producer and an artist as well, so I felt like it was better me kind of putting it all together myself. I made it in my studio so I just felt like, ‘Why not give something that’s quite honest and kind of not saturated with billions of my famous friends?’”

It’s been almost a decade since Labrinth began making music as a 13-year-old, and he says that nowadays he’s focused on what he wants out of music, rather than trying to deliver only what others want to hear.

“I’m a bit more game with the way I approach my records. I have a lot more of a sassy, sexy voice, you know,” he laughs.

“I think for me, I’ve just learned a lot more about sound, I’m more comfortable with the way I approach records. I just feel more confident… I’m less scared. When I was younger I was a bit more like “oh, I need to make what’s out there”, but now I’m just like ‘f**k that, I just wanna make music’.”
