Facebook is a worldwide phenomenon, in fact people who aren’t on Facebook are probably
considered the minority and that includes myself! For those of you who don’t already know, I am not a huge fan of Facebook. In fact, I really dislike the whole idea of it. I can appreciate its uses and why people are signed up to it because it is great for catching up with old friends, keeping in touch with those interstate or overseas but for all its glory it has its downfalls to.
Number 1: Facebook Life vs Real Life
Let’s be honest the main reason why people love it so much is so they can display this
amazing 'Facebook Life’, which is my number 1 reason why I dislike it, as the saying goes... you’re life isn’t as good as you make it out to be on Facebook. People love to show their perfect photos and share it with the world, it’s their own kind of ‘celebrity’ so to speak, which is great and perfect for this day and age given the hype and focus on celebrities but I find it very frustrating when people parade their lives and only post/check-in to places they consider “cool”. There are some people who only go to places or take photos specifically for Facebook (I know some of you are nodding your head to this one, whether it’s you or someone you know who does it), it is a little concerning that so many of us live vicariously through this medium, perhaps I just need to get with the times already?
Number 2: Anti-social
My second reason for disliking Facebook is it can be incredibly ‘anti-social’, why people might
disagree with this comment and think quite the opposite, I would have to disagree for the mere fact that I have been out having dinner or drinks with friends who sit on their Facebook page on their phone the whole time!
Can you imagine being at your own wedding, your OWN wedding and sitting on Facebook all night? I was at a friend’s wedding a few weeks ago and both the bride & groom throughout the whole reception were “checking in” on their Facebook page commenting on photos, comments and whatever else it is that you do on there! I mean this is your own wedding for goodness sake, does anyone not think this is a little over the top? You should be taking in the serenity and enjoying the night with loved ones, right? Generally speaking you invite those close to you to your wedding, so that poses the question, who the hell were they talking to on Facebook?
Number 3: Stalking
Last but certainly not least is the stalking factor, I know you’re all thinking I am crazy here because how good is it to check someone out that you have just met or want to know more about (and I do slightly enjoy that) but what about when it happens to you? I am a fairly private person and there are a lot of people out there who I wouldn’t want to know my business whether it’s people I know or people I have just met, it can be a little scary out there! And how safe are the privacy settings really, I mean really?
I know, I know, you are all thinking that I am totally missing out on this whole other life and I really just need to surrender to the idea of it and you might be right! But think about it, how long will it be before we start a relationship from ‘like this’ if you want to have sex?! Then again maybe that’s what I need to do to spruce up my love life so maybe it’s not such a bad idea after all!
What are your thoughts?
