The My Chemical Romance lads have burst back on the scene with a new look and a new approach that celebrates artistic freedom and leaves the band’s former darkness and morbidity behind.
The New Jersey quartet’s 2006 release, The Black Parade, was an incredibly creative concept album that tracked the death, afterlife and experiences of a dying cancer patient.
This time around the band’s traded the doom and gloom of their previous work for an approach that celebrates artistic freedom, as evident from the band’s wicked teaser for their new record.
“It’s so much more fun," frontman Gerard Way told NovaFM during an exclusive chat.
"The biggest thing is there are no rules anymore. Parade had a lot of rules. It was monochromatic and we were in these tight restrictive uniforms that were very much about punishment, in a weird way. And now it’s the opposite. It’s about freedom – freedom of self-expression.
“With the teaser we’re very plainly saying art is the weapon against life as a symptom. It’s a snapshot of the world – and that song is very much what it feels like to be in purgatory and not being able to be out there in the world doing your thing, being an artist."
