It doesn’t get any more Aussie than this.
Australian icons Powderfinger played all their greatest hits to 1,500 patriotic Aussie soccer fans in South Africa, the night before the Socceroos took on Germany in the 2010 World Cup.
The venue was Fanatics HQ, an incredibly well set-up cricket oval that those 1,500 Aussies are calling home for the first two weeks of the World Cup.
This gig was just for those 1,500 who had booked their World Cup trip with tour company ‘The Fanatics’. On Wednesday night, the same 1,500 will bounce around to the man many call the world’s greatest DJ, Fatboy Slim.
The stage was in a giant marquee, home to the 40m bar and the big screens. But as a concert venue for one of Australia’s biggest acts, it was very intimate.
The Finger opened with “Burn Your Name” from their latest album but it was the only song from the current record. In fact it was one of only two songs they played from the last two albums.
The Aussie fans were here for the anthems and Powderfinger did not disappoint.

Lead singer Bernard Fanning waved Socceroos scarves, taunted the English soccer team about choking after their 1-1 draw with the USA, and continually referenced Australia’s massive game against Germany the following day, happening only 700m from the venue.
Green and gold scarves with Powderfinger written on one side and Australia on the other were thrown out to the crowd, who were already decked out in their green and gold colours.
The night was so Australian you’d never believe it happened 11,000 kilometres from home.
