Nicki Minaj @ Brisbane Entertainment Centre, 19/05/12
Review: Angela Anderson
Forget Britney, Gaga and P!nk - Nicki is our new favourite, and she killed it at the Entertainment Centre last night.
Of course, she was 45 minutes late but the ‘popping’ dance-offs that broke out between fans decked out in pink tutus, wigs and skin tights made the time pass quickly.
Minaj pulls a varied crowd; from hip hop fans, to hoochie mammas and their friends. But it didn't matter who you were… when Nicki appeared as her Roman alter ego to belt out her first tune “Roman Holiday”, the stage was hers for the next hour and a half!
She stripped off a cape mid-way through that song to reveal a fluorescent green body suit with pink hot pants, giving us a first look at her massive bubble butt - and she sure knows how to shake it. She wasn't still for a moment as she got through eight songs like "Beez In The Trap", "A$$" and "Moment 4 Life" - all before her first costume change. Which lead to an air of awkwardness; Nicki quickly disappeared and a DJ tried to keep the crowd on a high… but all they really wanted was Miss Minaj.
She returned in a pink tutu and fired the crowd up, spraying a massive glitter gun at the moshpit before things got a little emotional. She told her fans she loves each and every one of them, whether they connected with her in her pre-commercial days or after her collaborations with Guetta, Jay-Z and Kanye. Then it got kinky - she grabbed a sign from the crowd saying "WHIP IT" - which she did! She spanked each of her dancers before getting everyone on their feet for "Turn Me On", "Starships" and "Where Them Girls At".
Then it was the crowd's turn to entertain. Minaj invited three fans on stage to rap "Bottoms Up" and they were proof Brisbane loves Minaj. Not one didn't know the words - but it was the most animated who scored the $500 cash prize.
The epic concert then wrapped up on a high with "Super Bass".
Nicki has the attitude and flamboyant rapper-style sorted, and we all know she has the voice…. but there were times when we didn't get to hear it over the massive bass at the Entertainment Centre. But we still love Minaj for being a 'cray b**ch!
