There would be a few industry sorts scratching their heads wondering just how Shock Records sent Bring Me the Horizon into the #1 spot on the ARIA album chart this week.
The UK metalcore act just completed a sold-out tour here and last week members were tweeting reminders to Aussie fans to buy the album and 'help it go top 10'. The release, There Is a Hell, Believe Me I've Seen It. There Is a Heaven, Let's Keep It a Secret, was strongly tipped to do just that but it seems no one expected the top spot.
In fact, the ensuing Twitter uproar which followed the announcement of the chart positions saw Shock Records become a trending topic in Australia.
Frontman Oli Sykes commented: "The band are in total awe. To have a number one album, in a country we don't even live in, is amazing. We feel like David Hasslehoff now. He's big in Germany, were big in Oz. But seriously, thankyou to our fans in Australia. We are beyond stoked and now we just can't wait for Soundwave. Sh*t is gonna be off the hook."
Shock Records has had some strong results in recent times with the #2 spot going to both Bloc Party's Weekend in the City and Parkway Drive's Deep Blue. However, both were tipped for the top spot at the time.
The latest chart topper is the label's third #1 debut. Offspring's Smash delivered in 1995 and You Am I's Hourly Daily scored in 1996.
