Who'da thought we'd get to part four?
I mean, as cool as the Underworld series has been at times, it's lucky to still be getting a cinema release. It's still lucky to have Kate Beckinsale for that matter and she's not exactly in demand.
Maybe she's attached to the character of Selene. Not that she's a larger than life personality. Where Twilight made vampires sooky wimps, Underworld makes them either angry, or emotionless altogether. Maybe that's why Beckinsale came back for a third round: a handy paycheck without having to dig deep into her acting talent.
It's by far the most violent of the series, but maybe that's because this time humans are getting killed as well. Back when it was just vampires or werewolves, it didn't seem so bad, but humans absolutely cop it here.
It's also the shortest of the series, not even lasting an hour and a half. It's like they had half an idea, but before finishing, they ran with it. Awakening is set twelve years after the events of Evolution and in that time, humans have discovered the existence of both Vampire and Lycan. Selene has been held captive while they experiment on her and a young Vampire child. If you remember the ending of Evolution, or you're awake for any of Awakening, the identity of the girl will come as no surprise. The result begs the question, was this unfinished idea for a sequel rushed into production, simply to beat the very similar premise to come in The Twilight Saga's Breaking Dawn: Part 2?
I will admit I'm not certain of what I'm about to say, but what I do "know" of Breaking Dawn the book, is that some crazy shit about Bella and Edward's kid is revealed. The fact that she's a hybrid is unprecedented and no one knows what to expect. The same happens here. Selene is reunited with her daughter, a hybrid creature born of both Vampire and Lycan - the first in history. She'll end up becoming stronger than both.
And that's about it. Neither Selene nor her daughter are particularly important to the storyline happening around them. Nothing really happens.
Still, I'd rather watch any of these than the Twilight's any day of the week.
More to come...
2 stars.
